The Search for Safer Skincare & Cosmetics

(With any purchase of $100 or more between now and 12/31/16, I will send you a Charcoal Cleansing Bar for FREE – a $24 value!)

If you are anything like me, you may have found that as you go through this “real food journey” that you are naturally starting to think about other related topics….

…like what you put on your skin.

Over the years, I have tried so many different skincare and cosmetic lines. Some would seem like they were working well for a while but would eventually start irritating my skin OR I would find that they actually contained potentially toxic ingredients. Ugh.

Then I’d start over with a new brand that sounded promising – again. And again….and again.

What we put on our skin matters. And there is currently a lack of regulation in the skincare industry. This short video does a great job of explaining this issue:

That’s why I was hesitant to try Beautycounter until two trusted friends mentioned it to me. I was impressed with the company’s  “Never List” of 1,500 ingredients they will never use in their products. Their mission “To get safer products into the hands of everyone” is so important as well. And they lead the way by helping to make progress on developing safer, yet effective products as well as working to promote safety at the government level.

Actually, I haven’t tried more than handful of their line yet, but what I have tried I have really loved. One is their Charcoal Cleansing Bar. I especially love how it doesn’t dry out my skin or make my face feel tight and dry!

• Deeply cleanses and detoxifies
• Active Binchotan Charcoal Powder with Witch Hazel help purify and balance skin
• Unscented
• Helps refine pores
• Absorbs impurities for smoother, brighter, healthier-looking skin
• Charcoal: Helps to deeply clean and draw out impurities within the skin
• Organic Witch Hazel: This oil hydrates the skin and helps prevent trans-epidermal water loss
• Organic Green Tea Extract: Antioxidant/Pore refining

I’ve also been using the Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation for a while. So far, I love it too! It’s lightweight and makes it feel like I don’t have any makeup on, but most importantly it also has great coverage. My fair skin can be pretty uneven at times and it looks quite flawless with this foundation. PLUS, I’ve worn it for several long days when I haven’t been able to wash my face until very late at night. I had no breakouts and it stayed fresh-looking the whole time!

I have some of the skin care products on their way, along with the Lengthening Mascara. I can’t wait to give that a try! I wear contacts and have sensitive eyes/skin and also have seriously wimpy eyelashes. Knowing that it’s a “Best of Beauty” Award Winner is great. I want SAFE products but I also want products that actually WORK!

Safety Info: “Other cosmetic brands commonly use ingredients in their mascara formulation that have been linked to adverse health effects, including cancer. Propylparaben, butylparaben, and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are preservatives commonly used in mascaras that can mimic estrogen and there is strong evidence that they can, in fact, disrupt hormone function. The U.S. National Toxicology Program has also classified BHA as a potential carcinogen. Another common preservative, quaternium-15, may release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, into the formula. Polyethylene glycols (PEGs), such as the emulsifier PEG-30 glyceryl stearate, can be contaminated with the known carcinogen 1,4-dioxane.”
Beautycounter is having a really great Winter Sale right now. It ends Jan 8th or while supplies last and I know a couple of the sets have already sold out! One that might interest some of you is the Love & Luster Lipgloss set. I’m a sucker for lipglosses but I typically have issues with many that make my lips dry and peeling. I SO wish I had included these on my order…oh well, next time!
Find their other Winter Sale items (like their Lipshine and Kids’ Conditioner) HERE at my link.
I promise to come back periodically and share about the products I’ve tried and what I’ve loved (or not loved). If you have given thought to switching out your current skincare or cosmetics for safer options, now is a great time! Please contact me if you have any specific questions and I’ll be happy to help.
It’s important to be mindful of what we are putting IN our bodies, but it is also just as important to consider what we are putting ON them as well. Let’s continue journeying together towards better health – inside and out!
